Good-Bye Professor Saito and thank you again
Prof SAITO Hiroshi passed away in January of this year. He was born in 1931, and he was about to turn 90 years. Dr Saito was leading the study of civilization theory here in Japan and was engaged in the study as a professor at the Department of Civilization, and as Director of the Civilization Research Institute at Tokai University. However, he originally was well-known as a Spinoza researcher. His most remarkable achievement was a new Japanese translation of Ethica, released as one of the volumes “Great books in the world” series, aside from a number of original writings.
In addition to the civilization theory and Spinoza’s philosophy, he also had a wide interest in post-modern philosophy, psychoanalysis, hermeneutics etc, and in 2016 he published, with co-translator Toyomi Iwawaki-Riebel, the Japanese translation of “Die Wiederkehr der Rache” by Prof Schoepf, Wuerzburg, a former fellow student since studying in West Germany. The book shows the theoretical pillars for philosophically wondering why retaliation and war are repeated in the world, and a time of conflict in the Middle East intensifies and the time of publication is overlapped.
On the other 
hand, the new translation and his introduction to Spinoza’s “Tractatus Theologico-Politicus (Theologico-Political Treatise)”, which he has been working on as a life-work, has been continuously undertaken (unfinished, unfortunately).
Having various viewpoints such as philosophy, politics, sociology, and psychoanalysis, we would like to share the way of life of Professor Saito forever,

齋藤博先生への感謝
齋藤博先生が今年1月に逝去されました。1931年のご生誕ですから、まもなく90歳を迎えられるところでした。齋藤先生は文明論の研究を主導され、東海大学では文明学科主任教授、文学部部長、文明研究所所長として、日本における文明論の発展に寄与されてきましたが、もともとはスピノザ研究者として広く知られていました。竹内良知、工藤喜作氏、清水礼子氏らとともに、日本人による独自のスピノザ像を確立された功績は非常に大きく、年余にわたりスピノザ協会の代表も務められました。工藤喜作氏との共訳で発表された『世界の名著』（中央公論社）に収められた『エティカ』は、若い世代がスピノザに関心を寄せる大きなきっかけを与えました。
先生はまた文明論やスピノザ哲学だけでなく、ポストモダンの哲学、精神分析、解釈学などに幅広く関心を寄せられ、2016年にはドイツ留学以来のご学友であるシェップ氏の労作『報復の連鎖』（学樹書院）の翻訳を岩脇リーベル豊美氏とともに完成されました。『報復の連鎖』は中東紛争が激化する時期と出版の時期が重なり、世界ではなぜ報復や戦争が繰り返されるのか、正義とは何なのかを哲学的に思索するための理論的支柱を示してくれました。
これらのお仕事と並行し、文字どおりライフワークとして取り組んでこられたスピノザ『神学・政治論』の新訳と解説が残念ながら絶筆となってしまいました。
哲学、政治学、社会学、精神分析といった様々な立場から、世のなかの動きをみつめ発言してこられた齋藤先生の生き方を、これからの時代を生きる私たちは可能な限り共有して参りたいものと考えています。
